Understanding Our Out-of-Network (OON) Provider Status
As Out-of-Network (OON) providers, we don't bill insurance companies directly. However, if your mental health insurance plan includes OON benefits, you might be eligible for reimbursement for our services.
If you decide to work with us and want to seek OON reimbursement, it's your responsibility to confirm your OON benefits with your insurance company. We can provide you with a superbill (a detailed receipt for services) upon request. Please keep in mind that our ability to provide a superbill doesn't guarantee reimbursement, as we don't work directly with insurance providers.
We recommend contacting your health insurance provider or employee benefit plan before our first session to discuss your OON coverage. Here are some key questions you might want to ask:
-
Do I have out-of-network mental health insurance benefits?
-
What is my deductible, and have I met it yet?
-
How many therapy sessions per year does my plan cover?
-
What is the reimbursement amount or percentage per therapy session?
-
Is approval from my primary care physician required for mental health services?
-
What is the typical timeframe for reimbursement?
-
Does my plan reimburse for services provided by a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate (LMFTA)?
Why We Don't Directly Accept Insurance
Our decision not to work directly with insurance companies is based on several factors that we believe prioritize your therapeutic experience and privacy:
-
Greater Autonomy: Insurance policies can often dictate the frequency and duration of therapy sessions, limiting your control and ours over the therapeutic process. Working outside of direct insurance billing allows us to determine the most beneficial treatment plan for your needs without these external restrictions.
-
Enhanced Privacy: Insurance companies frequently require access to sensitive information, including session notes and diagnoses. By not billing directly, your privacy is better protected, as this information remains strictly between us.
-
Consistent Care: A change in insurance can often force clients to switch therapists, disrupting the continuity of care. This can be emotionally challenging and hinder progress. Our OON status helps ensure a more stable therapeutic relationship.
-
Fair Provider Compensation: Insurance companies often delay or deny payments, and even when claims are processed, they may not cover a provider's full service rates. Operating as an OON provider allows us to maintain fair compensation for our services, which in turn helps us continue to provide high-quality care.
